OM System 150-600mm lens and the idea of small changes (February, 2024)
I appreciate the concept of the Olympus (OM System) 150-600mm lens. Embracing simpler, gradual updates is a natural way to achieve great results. Surely, there may come a positive generational update that could change the market forever. However, between such infrequent and dramatic updates, small and gradual improvements allow the technology to evolve smoothly and prepare for the next generational leap.
If, as customers, we demand the prompt release of incremental updates (recognizing that bundling multiple updates or designing a completely new lens may cause delays), we can enjoy earlier access to new possibilities.
Let's imagine what might happen if the idea of simple, inexpensive, and gradual updates is taken further by OM System:
Modern coatings and small improvements can be added to all old Olympus lenses.
The updated older lenses could become waterproof.
OM System IBIS may start to recognize Panasonic OIS.
More successful lenses from other manufacturers may emerge for M43.
High-quality M43 adapters for DSLR lenses with AF support could become available.
We might see an OM-5 II with USB-C, followed by an OM-5 III with improved AF.
