Do we really need the OM System PEN-FII retro-style m43 camera? (March, 2024)
The idea of remaking the Olympus PEN-F has been discussed for years and shows no signs of subsiding. Some argue that the remake might not gain enough popularity and does not align well with the new outdoorsy image of OM System. They say that the PEN-FII may cannibalize customers from the OM-5, leading to lower sales and higher manufacturing costs for both models. Additionally, they point out that the OM-5 already has a retro-looking design. As for me, I believe we can survive without the PEN-FII, but there may still be a significant market for the model.
Let's assume that the OM System PEN-FII will have identical specifications to the existing OM-5, including weather sealing, but in a different body. My camera choice does not depend on the camera's appearance, and I prefer the convenient grip of the OM-5. However, for many photographers, the design and appearance of the camera are crucial, providing an incentive to grab the camera and shoot photos. This alone should give the PEN-FII a decent market share. Nevertheless, if OMDS decides to add a few additional features, the market base could expand even further:
Smaller size and weight than the OM-5.
Kit with re-coated and weather-sealed 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 pancake lens.
Tilt screen, unlike the OM-5's, for street photography.
USB-C connection and charging. This should be included in the OM-5II anyway.
With the above improvements, I would consider adding the PEN-FII to my camera collection.
